Improper skincare, product overload due to lack of information, or using incorrect active ingredient combinations can easily worsen our skin’s condition. Overfeeding the skin with various active ingredients can cause problems just like not using the right products. Therefore, it’s crucial to first understand our skin type and identify the main issues we want to address.
For example, if we struggle with wrinkles, sensitivity, and dryness simultaneously, our priority should be restoring skin hydration and regenerating the protective barrier. Targeted active ingredients should only be introduced after stabilizing the basics (cleansing, moisturizing, sunscreen). With conscious planning and selecting the right products, our skin can remain healthy and radiant.
The Basics of Skincare
Every successful skincare routine is based on simplicity and following the correct order. The first step is to establish a basic skincare routine consisting of the following elements:
1. Cleansing: Thorough but gentle cleaning to remove impurities.
2. Toning: Restoring the skin’s pH and preparing it for further active ingredients.
3. Moisturizing: Balancing the skin’s water content and strengthening the skin barrier.
4. Sun Protection: UV rays can damage skin cells, cause sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer, as well as exacerbate skin diseases. Regular sunscreen use helps protect the skin and maintain its health.
After establishing the basics, targeted active ingredients, such as vitamin C or retinol serums, can be gradually introduced. It’s advisable to seek assistance from a cosmetologist or dermatologist in determining your skin type and selecting appropriate products.
New active ingredients should always be introduced gradually, one at a time. Each active ingredient needs at least 4 weeks to show real results and assess how our skin reacts to it. This approach helps avoid irritation and worsening of skin problems.
